The challenge
Taking medication correctly sounds simple and rarely is. Doses get missed. Schedules tangle across several medications. Stock runs out at the worst moment. The cost of getting it wrong is real, and for older people or anyone on a complex regimen, the people who worry most are often family members with no easy way to know whether today’s doses were taken.
The problem is not motivation. It is the lack of a dependable, low-friction system that fits a daily routine and gives both the patient and their family some peace of mind.
What we built
Pillpal is a mobile app designed around one job: helping people take the right medication at the right time. It brings together:
- Dose reminders timed to each medication, so the right nudge arrives at the right moment.
- Adherence tracking that records what was taken and what was missed, turning a vague “I think I took it” into a clear picture.
- Low-stock alerts so refills happen before the bottle runs empty.
- Family monitoring, so a carer or loved one can stay reassured without checking in constantly.
How we worked
Medication is high stakes and habit driven, so we treated it as a behaviour and trust problem rather than a reminders app. We prototyped the daily loop first, the reminder, the confirmation and the record, and made it frictionless before adding anything around it. We kept the experience calm and unambiguous, because in healthcare a confusing screen is not just annoying. It is a risk. Reminders, tracking, stock and family features were each built to be reliable and easy to trust.
The outcome
Pillpal is live on the App Store and Google Play, helping people stay on top of their medication and giving families a way to stay reassured. It is part of a family of focused mobile apps we design and build, each around a single idea done well, which we describe in A Family of Focused iOS Apps.
